Filmmaker, Mildred Okwo, Shaibu Husseini Resign From Nigeria’s Oscar Selection Committee

Journalist, Shaibu Husseini and a filmmaker, Mildred Okwo have resigned from the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) for the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

The duo announced their resignation on their individual twitter handles.

The NOSC, led by Chineze Anyaene, is responsible for submitting a Nigerian film in the International Feature Film (IFF) category of the Oscars.

In his post, Husseini wished other members of the committee well in their future endeavours.

“I have formally notified the Chairperson of the @officialnosc of my resignation as a member of the Nigerian Official Selection Committee For the @TheAcademy awards IFF submission,” he wrote.

“I wish the other members of the committee well in their quest to serve the film industry well.”

On her part, Okwo commended the efforts of Nigerian filmmakers working hard to put out movies that are qualified for global recognition.

“This is my last year working on the @officialnosc Committee. I am proud of those in the Nigerian film space working hard to make films good enough to travel the world & to make it to the @TheAcademy foreign language category competition. We will win this award some day soon,” she wrote.

“Thank you to members of the committee who through the years have championed us putting our best food forward. It’s time for me to move on and serve the industry in other ways.”

Their resignation comes amid concerns that no Nigerian film was eligible to be submitted for the 2023 Oscars.

This makes it the second consecutive year that the country would not submit a film for the IFF category of the Oscars.
