City’s hunt for a fifth Carabao Cup is still in success in six years with an impressive victory at the Etihad Stadium in the third round.
After a goalless first half, Riyad Mahrez broke the deadlock with a stunning free-kick that curled over the Chelsea wall and gave goalkeeper Edouard Mendy no chance.
Julian Alvarez took his goal tally to seven for the season when he was in the right place to add a second after Mahrez was denied by a smart save from the Frenchman.
Mendy was also in brilliant form to deny Jack Grealish a deserved goal with the City forward forcing him into three superb saves while another blistering run through the Chelsea defence was blocked just as he was about to score a potential goal of the season contender.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to Sky Sports: “We are really good. Pleased with the result and performance because of how good Chelsea are.
“Julian Alvarez has been an exceptional player from day one. He scores loads of goals. He fights against one of the best strikers in the world. Erling is not fully fit. They can play together. Good players can always play together.
“Stefan Ortega was man of the match. That shows how good Chelsea are. I don’t deny he was perfect. We see him every day, he’s an incredible keeper. He’s an incredible human being. He played three games lately and he’s been exceptional.”
