Ex-Labour Party Campaign Director Doyin Okupe drags EFCC to court

-

Former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, has appealed his money laundering conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Months before the elections, Doyin Okupe stepped down as the campaign DG of the Labour Party due to his money laundering case and not to be a distraction to the Labour Party.

As a result of his conviction for two counts of money laundering, Justice I. L. Ojukwu sentenced Okupe to two years imprisonment and an optional fine of 13 million naira on December 19, 2022.

The reason for his conviction was due to the statement of EFCC. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) In a court filing confirmed that Okupe had received more than N200m in cash from a former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (retired), without going through the banks.

The action of Mr. Doyin Okupe violated the money laundering law according to the EFCC and that is why he is being punished.

The EFCC further stressed that Mr. Okupe was found guilty of collecting cash payments exceeding the threshold allowed under sections 16(1)&(2) of the Money Laundering Act, without going through a financial institution.

As a result of the 26 counts for which he was found guilty, he was given the option of paying the N500,000 fine on each count, amounting to N13,000,000.

There is now a twist of event as Mr. Doyin Okupe has filed for a reversal of the conviction.

On Thursday, In an appeal filed by his lawyer, Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN), Okupe is seeking the reversal of his conviction.

He argues that of a truth, he received the said sums in cash, but not in his individual capacity but through the Office of the Senior Special Adviser to the President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs.

He said he acted under the instructions of the ex-President and hence, he should not be penalised unjustly.

Furthermore, he seeks a quick reversal of the conviction.

Likewise, he argues that since he didn’t carry out the act in his own personal capacity but through the office of the Senior Special Adviser to the President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, it is unfair and unjust to punish him now.

Mr. Doyin Okupe seeks justice.
