Reality TV star Tacha has voiced her strong criticism of The Headies, one of Africa’s most prominent Afrobeats award ceremonies, for hosting its 16th edition in Atlanta, US.
Tacha argued that such a significant indigenous award event should have remained in Nigeria rather than being taken abroad.
In her statement, Tacha questioned the decision, stating, “How is it that the biggest music award show in Africa is being held abroad back-to-back? What did our colonial master do to us? What is this slave mentality? How does it make sense?”
She acknowledged that hosting the event in the US last year made sense due to the rising popularity of Afrobeat and artists filling stadiums.
However, she found it puzzling that the ceremony was held overseas for a second consecutive year.
Tacha also drew a parallel with international award shows like the BET Awards, which, despite recognizing African artists, do not host their events in Africa.
She emphasized the need to preserve the prestige of indigenous awards by keeping them within their home country.
