Dele Momodu: Why I Did Not Defend My Friend, Tinubu

Sequel to Wednesday’s judgment delivered by the five judges of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), a key member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Dele Momodu, has given reasons why he did not bring out his head to defend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu whose election was upheld by the court.

Chief Momodu while reflecting on the judgment delivered by the PEPT headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani said his likes in the opposition who have loved to join any government in power but because the duty rests on them to set new standards for the country in ensuring to kick against electoral malpractices.

Chief Momodu who was among the presidential aspirant of the PDP said it would have been more convenient to defend his big brother and friend, President Tinubu but because of his principles he back he would back off.

“All the countries we all wish to run to were made better through the huge sacrifices and excruciating pains of some opposition leaders,” he said in a post on X on Thursday night.

“If it is about convenience, many of us would easily join any government in power but we must set new standards for our nation and kick against electoral malpractices.

“For me, it has nothing to do with who won or who lost but about the shambolic electoral process… It is my personal opinion and I stand by it. It would have been more convenient to defend my friend and Big Brother, but that’s not who I’m. It is a matter of principle.”

Prior to the pronouncement of the court on Wednesday those in the opposition were optimistic that the outcome would swing into their direction but it was a different ball game during the 12-hour judgment as the judges were dismissing some of the petitions filed against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

To this, both the Labour Party (LP) and the PDP are planning for the second to test the neutrality and impartiality of the court as they have vowed to head to the highest court of land, the Supreme Court to get justice.
