30 Confirmed Dead as Rival Benue Militia Groups Clash, Army Reports


The Nigerian Army has confirmed the successful neutralization of 30 rival militia groups in the Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.

The operation was led by Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke and Chairman of the Open Grazing Prohibition Enforcement Committee.

Addressing the media during a briefing session, Major General Igbinomwanhia clarified that the recent killings in Ukum were not herdsmen-related, dispelling speculations and reaffirming the military’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the area.

The enforcement of the ban on open grazing, following the expiration of a two-week ultimatum, underscores the government’s resolve to address security challenges and protect the lives and livelihoods of citizens.

Meanwhile,With a focus on enhancing security across local government areas, including Kwande, Apa-Agatu, and Otukpo.

The enforcement committee on open grazing prohibition, led by Major General Igbinomwanhia, has issued stern warnings to armed herdsmen and individuals engaging in open grazing, emphasizing the imperative of compliance with the law.

Furthermore,Deputy Governor of Benue state Sam Ode emphasized that the grace period for herdsmen has ended, signaling a new phase of enforcement to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all residents.

However,Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General Fidelis Mnyim has issued fresh directives outlining the legal stance on open grazing, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enforcing existing laws and protecting the rights of citizens.
