AFCON: Hosts, Ivory Coast, Axes Coach Following Stinging Defeat Against Equatorial Guinea

Ivory Coast, the hosts of the Africa Cup of Nations, have decided to terminate the contract of coach Jean-Louis Gasset during the tournament, as confirmed by the country’s football federation (FIF) on Wednesday.

“The contracts of coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated due to insufficient results,” the FIF said in a statement.

In their most recent Group A match on Monday, the Ivorians endured a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Equatorial Guinea.

As two-time champions, they now rely on favorable outcomes in the final group matches on Wednesday to secure a spot in the knockout phase as one of the top four third-placed teams.

Throughout the previous nine editions of the tournament, Ivory Coast has only faltered in progressing beyond the group stage once, which occurred in 2017.
