AFCON: Man Utd React To Osimhen’s Huge Contribution In Nigeria’s Victory Over Cameroon

Manchester United, one of the powerhouses in the English Premier League, closely observed the thrilling encounter between two footballing giants, Nigeria and Cameroon, at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan during the round of 16 clash of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The match witnessed an outstanding performance from Ademola Lookman, who had previously played for Everton, Leicester City, and Fulham.

Lookman’s exceptional skills were on full display as he scored two goals, securing a remarkable 2-0 victory for Nigeria and propelling them into the quarterfinals.

According to reports monitored by Overtnews, Manchester United had a keen interest in the clash between two heavyweight teams on Saturday night, as they were eager to assess the performance of their goalkeeper Andre Onana.

To their disappointment, the Red Devils’ star remained on the bench throughout the entire game, as the manager of the Indomitable Lions, Rigobert Song, decided to entrust the goalkeeping duties to Onana’s cousin, Fabrice Ondoa.

It was Lookman who managed to break the deadlock with a shot that slipped past the goalkeeper, nine minutes before the end of the first half.

In their analysis of the match, Manchester United’s official website emphasized the significant contribution made by Victor Osimhen in the lead-up to Lookman’s opening goal.

“It was, however, the three-time AFCON champions who took the lead before the interval, with Osimhen initially showing great strength to hold off Oumar Gonzalez,” Manchester United wrote.

“The Napoli forward played in Lookman with a neat pass and the 26-year-old made no mistake from close range, tucking home despite Ondoa’s best efforts.”

Last summer, there were strong rumors linking United with a potential transfer for the current African Footballer of the Year.

However, after the signing of Rasmus Højlund, those speculations faded away.

Nevertheless, Osimhen’s move to the Premier League is still a possibility, with Chelsea reportedly leading the race to secure his signature.
