AFCON: Nigeria Secure Round Of 16 Spot After 1-0 Win Over Guinea-Bissau

Nigeria secured their spot in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau, thanks to an unfortunate own goal by Opa Sangante in the first half.

In the 36th minute, Sangante inadvertently redirected a cross from Moses Simon into his own net, under pressure from Victor Osimhen.

The Super Eagles have secured their qualification in second place in Group A with seven points. However, they are behind Equatorial Guinea, who achieved a remarkable 4-0 victory over hosts Ivory Coast, giving them a much better goal difference.

Nigeria’s performance has been efficient, if not extraordinary, as they drew 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea in their first match and then secured a 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast through a penalty by William Troost-Ekong.

As a result, Jose Peseiro’s team will remain in Abidjan for a last-16 tie on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium. Their opponents will be the runners-up from Group C, which could potentially be Senegal, Guinea, or Cameroon.

Nigeria’s dominance was unproductive until the goal was scored, but they missed opportunities to increase their lead in the second half.

Osimhen, the African player of the year, and substitute Zaidu Sanusi both had goals disallowed for offside after the break.

Additionally, Calvin Bassey’s penalty appeal was denied, and Ola Aina squandered a good chance by blasting it over.

On the other hand, Guinea-Bissau’s Franculino Dju had a goal disallowed at the opposite end. Despite being eliminated before this match and finishing with three defeats, they had previously shocked

Nigeria with a victory in qualifying last March. However, they have yet to win a game in 12 attempts across four appearances at the Cup of Nations.
