Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced his intention to run for the presidency of Nigeria in the 2027 election. Despite ongoing challenges faced by his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abubakar remains resolute in his political ambitions.
Abubakar, who has sought the presidential office six times over the past three decades, most recently contested in the 2023 election as the PDP candidate. In that election, the 77-year-old secured 6,984,520 votes, finishing second to Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who won with 8,794,726 votes.
In an interview with Voice of America Hausa, Abubakar expressed his determination to continue his presidential pursuits. “God willing,” he affirmed, indicating his intent to run in 2027. He further stated that he would not desist from seeking the presidency as long as he has the strength, health, and longevity granted by God.
Drawing a parallel to former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, who he noted ran for office seven times, Abubakar emphasized his unwavering commitment. “A former President of America, Abraham Lincoln, didn’t he vie seven times?” he remarked.
Addressing the current state of the PDP, Abubakar acknowledged the necessity for the party to form alliances to regain power from the APC. “As the PDP party is right now, it is the only one standing up for election. There is no way it will win the election. It requires joining forces with other parties,” he stated.
