Benin Palace Chiefs and Royal Family Stand with Oba Ewuare II at Edo State High Court

Palace chiefs, members of the Benin Royal family, priests, priestesses, Benin sons and daughters, friends, and well-wishers of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, gathered at the Edo State High Court in Benin City to show solidarity with the revered monarch.

This show of support came in response to a legal action brought against the monarch by two suspended dukes, Gregory Akenzua and Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbaen.

The court session, initially scheduled for March, was adjourned until May 9th. Although the court anticipated a large turnout, attempts were made to restrict access to the courtroom area.

Eventually, supporters were allowed onto the premises, but access to the courtroom was limited to a few chiefs, excluding the crowd and journalists.

The suspended dukes challenged their suspension from office, arguing that only the state governor, not the monarch, has the authority to remove them from their positions. They cited Section 25(2) of the Traditional Rulers and Chieftaincy Law, asserting that their appointments were recognized by the Edo State Government.

Additionally, they referred to Section 28 of the same law, which empowers the state executive council to sanction them if necessary, contending that the Oba of Benin cannot usurp the power vested in the state executive council.
