Bobrisky: The Controversial Social Media Sensation

-

Born Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju in 1991, Bobrisky’s journey to fame and notoriety has been nothing short of tumultuous.

She attended both King’s High School and Okota High School for her secondary education before pursuing a BSc degree in accounting from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Bobrisky rose to prominence for her unapologetic defiance of conservative Nigerian norms, particularly regarding gender expression and sexuality.

Despite Nigeria’s strict laws against same-sex relationships, Bobrisky garnered a massive following on social media, particularly on Snapchat, where she gained attention by claiming to have a male lover.

In July 2021, Bobrisky unveiled a new physical appearance after undergoing surgery to enhance her feminine features, further solidifying her status as a polarizing figure in Nigerian society.

Her influence extended beyond social media, as she was invited to speak at events by certain event planners.

However, not everyone welcomed her presence.

A Nigerian presidential aide reportedly walked out upon seeing Bobrisky, and Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, Director General of Nigeria’s National Council for Arts and Culture, condemned her as “a national disgrace.”

Despite facing criticism and opposition, Bobrisky remained a prominent figure in Nigerian pop culture.

In fact, she was the most searched individual in Nigeria during a specific period in 2016, according to Google’s Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade.

Bobrisky’s relationship with other Nigerian celebrities, such as Tonto Dikeh, further fueled public interest in her life and activities.

However, Bobrisky’s journey was not without its controversies and conflicts. She found herself embroiled in clashes with fellow social media personalities, notably James Brown.

While Bobrisky claimed to have supported James Brown’s rise to fame, James Brown refuted these claims, asserting his independence and resilience in the face of adversity.

One incident involved Bobrisky allegedly throwing a bottle at James Brown and Papaya Ex during an event, sparking further tension and animosity between them.

Bobrisky’s troubles escalated in April 2024 when she was arrested for defacing naira banknotes, an act captured in social media videos.

Despite pleading guilty to currency abuse charges, Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison, highlighting the consequences of her actions.

Bobrisky’s biography is a testament to the complexities of fame, identity, and societal norms in contemporary Nigeria, where individuals like her challenge conventions and provoke both admiration and disdain.
