Lecturers at the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) have reportedly embarked on an indefinite strike action due to issues related to the union’s affairs.

This decision was announced by the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch at the university after a congress meeting held on the institution’s permanent campus on Thursday.

The strike stems from an ongoing conflict between the UniAbuja ASUU members and the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, as well as the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.

The point of contention revolves around the procedures for appointing a new Vice-Chancellor for the university.

Tensions escalated when an advertisement seeking applications for the position of Vice-Chancellor appeared in a national newspaper on March 15, 2024, indicating that the process to replace Prof. Na’Allah had begun.

The lecturers at the University of Abuja have taken a firm stance by embarking on an indefinite strike, expressing their dissatisfaction with the developments surrounding the union and the university’s leadership transition process.
