Erik ten Hag has officially announced that Andre Onana, the goalkeeper, will be making his way back to Manchester United ahead of Thursday following Cameroon’s elimination from the AFCON tournament.

Onana, who was a member of the Cameroon squad that successfully reached the knockout stages of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, unfortunately couldn’t progress further as they were defeated 2-0 by Nigeria in the round of 16, with Ademola Lookman scoring a brace.

After participating in all the group stage matches, the Manchester United goalkeeper, who holds the number one position, was unexpectedly benched for the match against Nigeria by manager Rigobert Song.

Prior to the defeat, Song disclosed that he made this decision because Onana’s team had conceded six goals during the group stages.

Now that his national team has been eliminated from the competition, Onana is scheduled to make his comeback to Manchester United. Ten Hag, confirming this, stated that he anticipates the return of his number one goalkeeper before Thursday.

“Andre Onana will be back for Thursday,” confirmed Ten Hag.

“Maybe, for the first time as long as I was manager, I can pick a team from the squad that is probably the strongest here.”

Altay Bayindir, the summer acquisition, had the opportunity to make his debut for Manchester United in the absence of Onana on Sunday. Despite conceding two goals, the team managed to secure a victory against Newport County and advance to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

When discussing Bayindir’s first appearance, Ten Hag expressed his admiration for the composure displayed by the Turkish international.

“I think it was a composed debut [by Bayindir]. Some good saves, so very composed. I think, overall, he can be happy.

“I was pleased with his performance.”

Onana’s anticipated return before Thursday might see him replacing Bayindir in the starting lineup for the upcoming match against Wolves at Molineux.

The Red Devils are eager to bounce back and secure a victory, especially after failing to win their previous two Premier League games.
