France Roars Back In Victory Over Chile In Int’l Friendly

France staged a comeback from an early setback to secure a 3-2 victory against Chile in their final friendly before the 2024 UEFA European Championships, maintaining their winning streak in Marseille with a fifth consecutive triumph.

Despite Didier Deschamps’ acknowledgment of his team’s shortcomings following their recent defeat to Germany, making nine changes to the starting lineup against La Roja didn’t immediately yield improvement for the French side.

Chile stunned the Stade Vélodrome with an early goal as Marcelino Núñez capitalized on a well-worked attack orchestrated by Mauricio Isla, catching goalkeeper Mike Maignan off guard. The injury to Jonathan Clauss further complicated matters for Les Bleus.

However, France showcased their attacking prowess, turning the tide of the match within 26 minutes.

Youssouf Fofana’s deflected shot leveled the score, marking only the second occasion in 11 Chile matches where both teams found the net. Randal Kolo Muani then put France ahead with a headed goal from Théo Hernández’s cross, although it came at the expense of Eduardo Camavinga’s injury.

As both teams vied for supremacy ahead of their respective continental tournaments, the intensity intensified in the second half.

Despite Chile’s valiant efforts, including a close effort from Eduardo Vargas hitting the woodwork, France extended their lead through Olivier Giroud, who capitalized on Kolo Muani’s assist.

Although Darío Osorio pulled one back for Chile with his maiden international goal, it wasn’t enough to overcome France’s advantage.

The defeat marked Chile’s 10th loss in their last 14 away matches, prompting reflection for coach Ricardo Gareca ahead of the 2024 Copa América, while Deschamps found encouragement in France’s performance, signaling a strong lineup for Euro 2024.
