Arsenal boosted their hopes for the Premier League title by breaking their Old Trafford curse with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Manchester United on Sunday, reclaiming the top spot in the table.

Leandro Trossard netted the solitary goal in the 20th minute, securing Arsenal’s second away win against United in 17 matches and pushing them one point clear at the summit.

Manchester City still control their fate in the title race with two matches remaining, compared to Arsenal’s one.

Nevertheless, Arsenal’s win kept the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side ahead of their upcoming clash with Tottenham on Tuesday.

This victory marked Arsenal’s first Premier League double over Manchester United since the 2006/07 season, while also dealing a blow to United’s European qualification aspirations.

Despite showing more resilience than in their previous defeat to Crystal Palace, Manchester United have only managed one win in their last eight Premier League matches, leaving them eighth in the table, three points behind both Newcastle and Chelsea.

Arsenal’s resurgence in 2024 has kept them firmly in contention for their first league title in two decades, having won 15 and drawn one of their 17 league games since the start of the year.

However, their performance against United was far from their best, as they faced an injury-hit opposition and challenging weather conditions in the north-west of England.

The pressure intensified on United manager Erik ten Hag following their loss to Arsenal, with scrutiny on his team selection and tactical decisions.

Despite fielding a depleted squad, United failed to contain Arsenal’s attack, with Casemiro’s defensive lapse allowing Trossard to score the decisive goal.

United’s co-owner Jim Ratcliffe witnessed the defeat at Old Trafford, highlighting the challenges ahead for the club’s management.

While United showed determination in the second half, Arsenal’s defense stood firm to secure their sixth clean sheet in seven away league games.

Although United had chances to equalize, Arsenal held on for the crucial victory, keeping the title race alive as they head into the final stretch of the season.
