Police reported that a 14-year-old boy tragically lost his life on Tuesday following a street attack in east London, where a man armed with a sword stabbed the youth, two police officers, and two others.

The assailant used what appeared to be a Samurai-type sword in the Hainault district, shortly before 7:00 am (0600 GMT).

Law enforcement officers stated that they apprehended a 36-year-old suspect using Taser stun weapons and placed him under arrest. They emphasized that the incident is not believed to be terror-related.

Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell of London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that all five victims were transported to the hospital.

The two police officers were awaiting surgery for “significant” injuries, he added. But they, and those sustained by the two members of the public, were not believed to be life-threatening.

“It’s with great sadness that one of those injured in this incident… has died from their injuries,” he told reporters at the scene.

“He was taken to hospital after being stabbed and sadly died a short while after.”

Buckingham Palace conveyed that King Charles III described the stabbings as “horrific” and commended the “courage” demonstrated by the emergency services.

“His thoughts and prayers are with all those affected — in particular, the family of the young victim who has lost his life,” a spokesman said.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the stabbings “shocking”. “Such violence has no place on our streets,” he added in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“I’d like to thank the emergency services for their ongoing response, and pay tribute to the extraordinary bravery shown by police on the scene.”

Video footage and photographs circulating on social media seemed to depict a man wearing a yellow jumper on the streets, wielding the weapon near houses.

Emergency service vehicles, including police, fire, and ambulances, were observed behind cordons, with some near the town’s underground railway station.

A resident, requesting anonymity, shared that she took cover behind a window while the suspect stood outside her home, shouting “do you believe in God?” at the police.

“We were very scared and trying to hide and not show ourselves through the window because he was standing right next to our house and he could have seen us if he looked up,” she added.

“We were very scared and we didn’t know what to do.”

Another witness reported seeing two police officers pursuing the man, urging him to drop the weapon.

Law enforcement officers in England, Scotland, and Wales typically do not carry firearms as part of their routine duties but are equipped with Taser weapons to incapacitate suspects.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed profound sadness over the incident, stating he was “absolutely devastated.” He reassured the public of his close communication with the city police commissioner.

“The police offices and emergency services showed the best of our city — running towards danger to protect others and I thank them from the bottom of my heart,” he said.

Last week, Sunak voiced criticism regarding the mayor’s handling of knife crime in the British capital.

Official statistics revealed a 20 percent rise in knife-related incidents in London in 2023, totaling 14,577 offenses, which was one percent lower than pre-pandemic levels in the year leading up to March 2020.

Across England and Wales, there was a seven-percent surge in knife crime, totaling 49,489 offenses, with the majority (29 percent) occurring in metropolitan areas, as stated by the Office for National Statistics.
