Nine individuals, one of whom was pregnant, sustained injuries in a gas explosion near the Ajegunle-Apapa vicinity of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) identified a gas leak as the cause, which subsequently ignited a high-tension cable, leading to a fire incident in an area recognized for its gas cylinder trading operations.

“Tragically, nine individuals, including a pregnant woman and several children and adults, suffered varying degrees of burn injuries,” the  Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said late Tuesday.

“They received immediate medical attention from the Lagos State Ambulance Service and are currently undergoing further treatment at the Ajeromi General Hospital and Gbagada Burnt & Trauma Centre.”

Following the explosion, property damage encompassed four commercial tricycles, six lock-up shops, and a portion of a residential bungalow.

However, firefighters successfully protected nearby structures, notably a crucial fuel service station, preventing additional losses, as confirmed by the LSFRS.

This follows a recent incident in Ogun State where one fatality and two injuries were recorded as a result from a collision involving a gas-laden tanker at the bustling Itaoshin market in Abeokuta.

“The crash occurred at about 1610 hrs involving a tanker laden with gas. The number of people involved was six and all male adults. Two got injured and unfortunately, one person died which is the motor boy who was trapped,” the spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Florence Okpe said.

“The fire service was contacted immediately and the scene was cordoned off to avoid a secondary crash.”

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State made a personal visit to the site of the explosion following the incident. During his visit, he assured affected individuals of compensation for the tragedy that occurred in the South-Western state.
