In an enthralling matchup, Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen narrowly defeated Freiburg 3-2, extending their lead to 10 points over reigning champions Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings.

Coming off a 5-0 loss to West Ham in Europe midweek, Christian Streich’s Freiburg were determined to prove themselves against the league leaders.

However, despite their efforts, Freiburg, who had not won a home league game in their last three attempts – their worst run since December 2020 – faced another challenging day in the Black Forest.

Florian Wirtz, Leverkusen’s standout player, capitalized on an assist from Alex Grimaldo, confidently finding the net with a composed finish within the first 90 seconds.

Nevertheless, Freiburg responded with resilience, as Ritsu Doan showcased his individual skill, combining with Lucas Holer for a delightful one-two before slotting the ball past Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky with a sweeping finish.

Galvanized by the equalizer, Freiburg created more opportunities in the first half, but Leverkusen’s dominance showed five minutes before halftime. A fluid attack led to chaos in the Freiburg box, allowing Adam Hlozek to calmly slot in from close range.

Alonso’s team continued their control at the start of the second half, although Freiburg remained resilient. Leverkusen knew that gathering 15 points from their remaining nine games would be crucial in breaking Bayern’s grip on the title.

Their dominance persisted, and Patrik Schick, the hero from midweek, ingeniously chipped Jeremie Frimpong’s cross over Noah Atubolu in the Freiburg goal, extending their lead to 3-1.

Despite Streich’s triple substitution injecting some urgency, Leverkusen continued to dominate possession comfortably. Yet, a goal from Yannik Keitel, bundled over the line against the run of play with just 10 minutes remaining, set up a thrilling finale at the Europa-Park Stadion.

Despite Freiburg’s valiant effort, they eventually succumbed to fatigue, allowing Alonso’s impressive team to play their way out of danger and extend their remarkable unbeaten streak to 37 competitive games.
