Pro-Wike Supporters Abandon Grassroots Development Initiative for Fubara

The Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), long associated with former Governor and current Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, have announced their resignation from the organization.

Barely four days after Achor Nna, the councilor representing the ward of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, resigned his position to support Governor Siminalayi Fubara, another group of Wike’s supporters have collapsed their structure for the Rivers governor.

Led by Collins Onunwo, former coordinator of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the group cited their decision as a strategic move to align with the interests of Rivers State and its people.

Having previously been staunch supporters of Wike, the coordinators emphasized their allegiance to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, underlining their commitment to safeguarding the mandate given to him by the people of Rivers State.

Joining Fubara’s camp most recently are 12 men who previously served as Local Government Coordinators of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), a political pressure group pivotal in mobilizing grassroots support for the FCT minister during Rivers State’s gubernatorial elections since 2015.

Their decision, they emphasized, was rooted in the imperative of protecting the democratic process and preserving the integrity of the electoral outcome.

Speaking at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Onunwo highlighted the evolution of GDI from a vehicle of support for Wike to a platform dedicated to advancing the interests of the state.

He underscored the importance of upholding the will of the electorate and ensuring that their votes are respected and upheld.

Meanwhile,He pledged the determination and dedication of the former GDI coordinators to the success of the policies and programmes of the present administration.

He issued a stern warning to those engaged in conflict with Dr. Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff at the Government House, advising them to reconsider their actions or be prepared to confront the collective anger of Rivers’ youth, women, and elders.

However,Former Public Relations Officer of GDI ACF, Christian Abu, emphasized that the resignation signifies a transition towards a more streamlined and focused approach to political engagement.

He clarified that while GDI had been instrumental in previous electoral victories, the decision to resign was motivated by a desire to prioritize the collective welfare of Rivers State over partisan affiliations.
