Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano, reliable sources have disclosed. This development comes after the Kano State House of Assembly passed a resolution to dethrone the current Emir and dissolve the four new Emirates created in the state under a controversial 2019 law.
Although the reinstatement has not been formally announced, credible inside sources have confirmed that Sanusi II is expected to return to Kano on Friday.
Explaining the situation, a source stated, “With the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. There is no need for confirmation; we just have to wait for the Governor to assent to it.”
The restructuring of the Kano Emirate, which led to the creation of new Emirates, was widely viewed as a political move to reduce the influence of Sanusi II, known for his outspoken criticism of the previous administration under Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. This restructuring fragmented the authority of the old Kano Emirate Council, significantly diminishing its power and influence.
In a related development, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly who sponsored the Amendment Bill, revealed to journalists after Thursday’s session that, “the bill has been sent to the governor for assent. Currently, there is no active Emir in Kano or any of the five Emirates – Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye. The law now empowers the governor to convene the traditional kingmakers to select a new Emir.”
