The Senate has passed the 2024 NDLEA Act (Amendment) Bill, which includes the provision of the death penalty for drug traffickers, replacing the previous life sentence punishment.

The proposal was adopted during a session where the Senate reviewed the penalty provisions of the amendment bill.

The amendment, proposed by Senator Peter Nwebonyi under clause 11, elicited a mixed response during the voice vote, with a slight uproar ensuing due to perceived haste in its consideration and passage. Senator Adams Oshiomhole voiced his discontent over the process, but the Deputy Senate President upheld the ruling, citing procedural adherence.

In addition to this amendment, the Senate initiated a review of salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits of judicial office holders to combat bribery and corruption while ensuring the judiciary’s independence.

An executive bill addressing the remuneration of judicial office holders at both federal and state levels also gained traction, with unanimous support. However, some lawmakers advocated for a broader review of remuneration across sectors, considering the prevailing economic challenges.

The bill was referred to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters for further scrutiny, with a report expected in four weeks.
