Sharp Decline As Power Generation Plummets by 32.31% to 2,775MW

Amidst ongoing controversy surrounding the new electricity tariff and amid persistent issues with inadequate power supply, electricity generation plummeted to 2,775 megawatts (MW) Thursday, marking a 32.3 percent decrease from the 4,099.87MW recorded last week.

This information was disclosed in data released by the Nigeria Electricity System Operator (NESO), a semi-autonomous unit of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Despite the recent review of billing for Band A power consumers, there has been no improvement in the power value chain. Challenges such as insufficient gas supply to thermal stations and the poor condition of transmission lines persist, with generation averaging 4200 megawatts since the beginning of the year.

According to data from the Independent System Operator (ISO), as of 6pm yesterday, load allocation to the eleven Distribution Companies (DisCos) amounted to 2,775.00 megawatts. Abuja Disco received the highest allocation at 428MW, followed by Ikeja Electric at 422MW, Eko Disco at 359MW, Ibadan Disco at 335MW, Benin Disco at 227MW, and Enugu Disco at 200MW.

The distribution companies with the lowest allocation included Yola Disco at 79MW, Jos Disco at 158MW, Kaduna Disco at 181MW, Kano Disco at 188MW, and Port Harcourt Disco at 198MW.

This highlights the insufficiency of generation for transmission and distribution to households and organizations across the nation, leading Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to implement load shedding to distribute limited electricity among many consumers at different times.

In response to the supply shortfall, some Discos have taken to their social media platforms to address their customers.

For instance, Ibadan Disco issued a public announcement titled “List of Band A feeders with Unmet hours of service (11th April 2024),” apologizing for the inability to deliver the estimated hours of supply due to earth faults on the 33kv lines.

They reassured customers of their commitment to providing the estimated hours of supply.
