Tension Brews Between Nigeria’s Labour Unions Ahead of Planned Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are currently embroiled in a dispute regarding the impending nationwide industrial action set for February 27 and 28, 2024.

The discord arises from the NLC’s unilateral declaration of a two-day strike without consulting the TUC, a departure from the collaborative ethos between the two prominent labor organizations.

TUC Secretary General Nuhu Toro conveyed his disappointment to the NLC leadership through a letter, underscoring the absence of consultation and stressing the importance of reaching mutual agreements on significant issues like this.

This discord marks the third instance of unilateral action taken by the NLC under its current leadership, prompting concerns about a pattern of disregard for collaboration.

Amidst calls from the Department of State Services (DSS) to prioritize dialogue over confrontation, the Ajaero-led faction of the NLC remains steadfast in its commitment to proceed with the planned strike, further escalating tensions within the labor movement.

As the nation approaches the scheduled strike date and the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued jointly by both unions, stakeholders eagerly await a resolution to the conflict, hopeful for a return to unity and solidarity in championing the interests of Nigerian workers.
