Tiwa Savage, the acclaimed Nigerian singer, has ventured into filmmaking with her debut production, ‘Water and Garri,’ aiming to present Africa in a positive light.

In a conversation with CNN’s Larry Madowo on African Voices Changemakers, the 44-year-old artist emphasized the importance of portraying African stories from a female perspective.

“I think it is important for people to see Africa and see film being interpreted from a female point of view as well,” Savage said. “I love the story and I think it is gonna draw a lot of people back to Africa in a different way.”

Savage noted the long-standing negative perceptions of Africa and highlighted how the rise of Afrobeats music is reshaping the global view of the continent. “So, it is very very important for us to tell our own story,” she added.

Directed by Meji Alabi, ‘Water and Garri’ premiered on Prime Video on May 10. The film follows Aisha, an ambitious fashion designer who returns to Nigeria after a decade in the United States, coping with the loss of a family member.

The narrative explores themes of reconciliation and self-discovery as Aisha reconnects with her family, old friends, and past love.

The movie stars Jemima Osunde, Mike Afolarin, and Andrew Bunting, among others, contributing to a rich portrayal of African life and culture.
