The Imo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed a petition filed by the Labour Party seeking to remove Hope Uzodinma from office. The Tribunal confirmed that Uzodinma, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, legitimately won the November 11, 2023, governorship election in Imo State.

Uzodinma secured 540,308 votes, significantly outpacing his nearest rival, Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 71,503 votes. The Labour Party candidate, Athan Achonu, placed third with 64,081 votes, while none of the other 15 candidates managed to reach 10,000 votes.

The tribunal, sitting in Abuja on Friday, May 24, 2024, dismissed the Labour Party’s petition on several grounds. Firstly, it ruled that the issue of Uzodinma’s eligibility was a pre-election matter within the exclusive jurisdiction of the APC, and not something the petitioner, a non-member of the APC, could contest.

Secondly, the tribunal found that the Labour Party failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the electoral provisions were not complied with during the November 11, 2023, election. Consequently, the court upheld Uzodinma’s victory, confirming his position as the Governor of Imo State.
