Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted temporary bail to DCP Abba Kyari, the former Commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, for two weeks to allow him to bury his mother.

Kyari’s bail was set at 50 million Naira with a surety of the same amount. The surety, who is also Kyari’s counsel, is required to deposit a copy of his call-to-bar certificate with the court’s deputy registrar.

As part of the bail conditions, Kyari must surrender his travel passport to the court and report regularly to the nearest National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) formation during the bail period.

This order is in place pending the ruling on Kyari’s bail application, scheduled for May 31, 2024. Although Kyari’s mother, Yachilla Kyari, passed away on May 5, 2024, it is unclear if this influenced the decision to grant bail.

Kyari was implicated by the FBI in 2021 in connection with alleged international internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, known as Hushpuppi. He was subsequently arrested by the NDLEA in February 2020 for alleged drug-related offenses and has been held at Kuje prison in Abuja since then.
