In their Euro 2024 opener in Munich, hosts Germany secured a resounding 5-1 victory over Scotland, who were reduced to 10 men.

Germany’s quest for a historic fourth European title got off to an ideal start. Wirtz opened the scoring in the tenth minute, followed by Musiala’s powerful strike that doubled Germany’s advantage.

The night took a turn for the worse for Scotland as Ryan Porteous received a red card for a reckless challenge on Ilkay Gundogan, leading to a penalty converted by Kai Havertz.

Substitute Niclas Fuellkrug increased Germany’s lead in the second half, and despite a late own goal from Antonio Rudiger, Germany’s campaign got off to a near-perfect start.

Germany capped off their dominant performance with a fifth goal from Emre Can in the game’s final moments.

Scotland’s hopes for a successful campaign suffered a significant setback, and they must now regroup ahead of their upcoming matches against Switzerland and Hungary in Group A.

Following a string of disappointing performances in major tournaments, including consecutive group stage eliminations in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, Germany’s experienced squad made a bold statement in their opening match.

As hosts of a major men’s tournament for the first time since the 2006 World Cup, Germany aims to recapture the excitement that revitalized the national team’s fortunes after a period of struggles.

Germany’s coach, Julian Nagelsmann, had emphasized his team’s determination to make amends for past disappointments, and since his appointment in September, the team’s prospects have improved, and optimism has grown.

In contrast, Scotland’s coach, Steve Clarke, encouraged his team to approach the tournament with confidence and fearlessness, following their return to the Euros after a long absence.

From the outset, Germany took control of the match against Scotland, who had struggled in their recent games, with only one win in their last nine matches.

Despite an early attempt by Wirtz being blocked by Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn, Germany quickly gained momentum.

Toni Kroos, who came out of retirement earlier this year, initiated a sequence that led to Wirtz scoring from the edge of the area, with Gunn unable to prevent the shot from finding the net via the post.

As Toni Kroos prepares to retire after the tournament, he and Ilkay Gundogan are leveraging their vast experience to control the midfield with exceptional wisdom and poise.

Gundogan expertly threaded a pass through Scotland’s defense, finding Kai Havertz, who cleverly worked it back to Jamal Musiala. The Bayern Munich attacker skillfully created space for himself and unleashed a powerful strike into the roof of the net.

Although Musiala was initially awarded a penalty after being fouled by Ryan Christie and Kieran Tierney, the referee, Clement Turpin, deemed the foul to have occurred outside the area after consulting the touchline monitor.

However, this merely delayed Germany’s third goal, which eventually came from the penalty spot after a VAR review led to Ryan Porteous being sent off for a reckless challenge on Gundogan, who was fouled while attempting to convert the rebound from his own header.

Havertz confidently dispatched the penalty, sending Gunn the wrong way, and extinguishing the remaining hopes of Scotland’s enthusiastic and sizable traveling support.

In the second half, Scotland aimed to minimize their deficit, but Fuellkrug’s powerful strike into the top corner, shortly after replacing Havertz, proved unstoppable.

Although Fuellkrug scored again, the goal was disallowed due to offside, sparing Scotland further distress.

Scotland’s sole consolation came when Ruediger unintentionally deflected Scott McKenna’s header past Neuer, but Germany responded with a fifth goal in the final moments, as substitute Emre Can expertly curled a shot into the net from 20 yards, capping a triumphant night for the German team.
