FCT Authorities Launch Probe into Disturbing Video of School Bullying Incident in Abuja

Authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have initiated an investigation into a disturbing video circulating online, depicting a female student being bullied by her classmates at a school.

The incident occurred during a visit by two ministers to the learning institution on Tuesday, sparking widespread outrage.

The viral video, which surfaced early Tuesday on social media, involved students of the Lead British International School, prompting demands for justice for the victim.

Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, confirmed that investigations have been launched into the matter. Adeh also stated that officers from the Command have been deployed to the school to ensure law and order, especially as some concerned parents reportedly gathered at the school premises on Tuesday.

“In a proactive response to alarms raised by some members of the public regarding videos circulating on social media depicting the bullying of students at the above-mentioned school, the FCT Police Command is on top of the situation and has deployed seasoned officers to the school premises for investigations and to forestall any possible breakdown of law and order,” she said.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, and her education counterpart, Tahir Mamman, visited the school on Tuesday afternoon, expressing their concern over the incident.

Kennedy-Ohanenye confirmed that investigations into the matter have been initiated. Additionally, the school has been closed for three days to facilitate the investigations, with the possibility of an extension if needed.

The education minister held a closed-door meeting with the school’s management on Tuesday, as confirmed by Folasade Boriowo, the ministry’s director of press. However, details of the discussion are yet to be disclosed.

In the viral video captured by OvertNews, a disturbing scene unfolds as a female student is seen repeatedly slapping another student, the victim, in an act of apparent bullying.

The aggressor said, “Who broke my heart?” as she repeatedly slapped the victim on both sides of the cheek.

Journalists were barred from entering the school premises, but students who spoke through the school gate revealed that bullying was a prevalent issue at the Lead British International School.

Despite numerous complaints made to the school’s management, students claimed that the issue of bullying had not been adequately addressed.

A statement posted on the school’s Facebook page indicated that the management has initiated an investigation into the incident.

“We will be working with the perpetrators and their families, offering counselling and disciplinary measures to address their behaviour which has no place in society,” the statement signed by LBIS Head of School, Abuja, Abraham Ogunkanbi, read.

“We have also immediately initiated an investigation, appointing a dedicated team to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. The team has been gathering information, including reviewing video footage and interviewing witnesses, to understand the full scope of the incident and identify the immediate and remote causes”.

The video has ignited widespread outrage on various social media platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Users across these platforms are expressing their outrage and calling for justice for the victim of the bullying incident.
