Football Legend Romario, 58, Makes Remarkable Return to the Pitch for Rio Side!

Romario, the retired Brazilian striker, aged 58, has made headlines by registering as a player for America-RJ, a Rio de Janeiro state second division team of which he is now the president.

This move marks his return to the sport after a 15-year hiatus since retiring in 2008. Romario, a football legend, represented Brazil in two World Cups, notably contributing five goals to secure their victory in 1994.

Notably, in 2009, he briefly emerged from retirement to play for America, his late father’s beloved team, participating for 22 minutes in a match that crowned them champions of Rio de Janeiro’s second division.

Interestingly, Romario’s son, Romarinho, is also a player for America, adding a familial touch to the club’s legacy.

In a post on his Instagram page on Tuesday, Romario said: “I’m not going to compete in the championship, but rather play a few games for the team of my heart and make another dream come true, playing alongside my son.

“What do you think?”

The Rio de Janeiro Football Federation has officially confirmed Romario’s registration as a player, announcing that he will receive a minimum wage, which will be donated to the club. Romario boasts an illustrious football career, amassing over 70 appearances for Brazil from 1987 to 2005, scoring an impressive 56 goals.

Throughout his career, he had notable stints with Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, and Fluminense in Brazil, as well as spells with Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, and Valencia.

Although he claimed to have scored over 1,000 goals in his career, this figure includes strikes from youth-level, unofficial, and friendly matches.

Following his retirement from football, Romario transitioned into politics, serving as a senator and leading congressional investigations into corruption within Brazilian football.
