Tragically, at least 14 individuals lost their lives in a head-on collision involving two Toyota buses on Sunday in Kogi State.

Thirteen (13) individuals managed to survive the accident, which took place at Aloma community in Ofu Local Government Area of the state, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to an eyewitness account, the accident occurred between a Toyota Sienna bus traveling from Port Harcourt to Abuja and a Toyota Hiace bus heading towards the southern part of the country.

“Thirteen persons, including the driver of the Hiace bus, were completely roasted by the fire that engulfed the bus immediately after the head-on coalition.

“One of the four surviving persons in the bus died in hospital from burns suffered, bringing the number to 14 that died,’’ he said.

According to the eyewitness, none of the 10 occupants of the Sienna bus died in the accident.

“But they were badly wounded and are receiving treatment in a hospital,” he added.

He commended the villagers for their swift response in coming to the scene of the accident and rescuing the injured individuals.

“It is because of their timely intervention that the Sienna bus did not get burnt as well,’’ he said.

The eyewitness attributed the accident to speeding and potholes on the road. They also mentioned that it took rescuers three hours to extricate the driver of the Sienna bus, whose two legs were severely injured.

When contacted, Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, the Kogi Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the accident.
